Install instructions for acarsd
Download the latest ACARS decoder
from our download page
. After downloading, unzip or untar the archive. Windows users can use Winzip
for example. Linux users should use tar -xzf archivename
Now should have the following files in the current folder:
tk84.dll tcl84.dll acarsd.cpr installer.exe quickinstall.exe (and some .TXT files)
Please note: It's possible that .DLL files are not shown in your Windows Explorer!
acarsd.cpr installer quickinstall acarsd acarsdb libacarsd.so (and some .TXT files)
You can now select between a fast installation or a user defined installation.
Fast installation use default settings for your system. Under Windows acarsd will be installed in C:\acarsd\ and under Linux in /opt/acarsd/
You can later change all settings with the setup/config utility
To start the fast install doubleclick on the quickinstall.exe or start ./quickinstall
Note for Linux Users: Both installer needs a running X System! If you have no X server, create your own destination directory and move all files in this folder.
The user defined installation can be started with a doubleclick an installer.exe or with ./installer
You can change all settings within the installer. If all settings are ok for you, use the Install acarsd now entry from the Installation/Configuration menu. acarsd will now be installed in the selected folder. You should also create the needed binary databases for your system. Select the Databases menu and create all binary files by pressing the doit button.
The groundstation databases is not available in the archive, because this databases needs special settings for your area. See the links section in this page
Now you can start your acarsd ACARS Decoder
and ACARS Server

Under Windows doubleclick the acarsd.exe. acarsd should start. If not, please consult our Yahoo Newsgroup for help.
Linux users can selected between a ncurses based layout or a graphic GUI (X required). To start the ncurses interface, start ./acarsd
You can later also attach the graphic interface to your acarsd system
To start with the graphic interface, start acarsd with ./acarsd --withgui. If your system is already running, start the GUI with ./acarsdgui -attach
Connect your radio receiver to the soundcard line-in socket via a suitable audio lead and adjust the receiver volume.
Check your mixer application for the correct recording source and recording volume!
Note that you should leave the receiver SQUELCH control open.
Tune your receiver to the ACARS transmission frequency in use in your area (see ACARS frequencies
If you have the correct frequency and acarsd shows nothing (no errors and not good contacts) stop acarsd and check your soundcard input. On some soundcards it is not possible to change the sampling rate. In such cases i have installed ALSA SOUND under Linux
Under Windows all new cards with 'up to date' drivers can be used.
Decode ACARS transmission
Wait for ACARS transmissions to occur. Decoded transmissions will be displayed on the screen and logged to the file acarsd-YYYYMMDD.log or ANAD-YYYYMMDD.log which rotate automatically at midnight.
Transmissions with parity errors, block errors or transmissions with wrong FCB are not logged!
Also all contacts are logged to a binary database (acarsd.db) for use in enhanced mode and for reports.
